| Contintental Europe beats the world with sylish products |
| England ranks among the best countries for stylish products, according to a UK poll of young designers.
UK Design students put Continental Europe ahead of the more practical Scandinavians and the trend-setting Far East.
For style, the UK came third with the USA trailing, according to the independent research conducted on behalf of Oregon Scientific, the makers of consumer electronic products for ‘smart’ living.
But the UK came top overall for having the best product design skills – combining style with innovation and functionality. Three in four believed this, while one in two voted for Europe.
The study shows:
• One in two (49 per cent) claims Continental Europe is best for style – ahead of Scandinavia (41 per cent)
• The UK is third with 27 per cent of the vote, the Far East gains 22 per cent and North American trails with 12%.
• Europe scores lowest on functionality with just 12 per cent voting it the best. The UK and Far East scored 25 per cent and 26 per cent respectively, while North America gains its best score of 31 per cent.
New technology is seen as a big influencer on product design and students believe that 3G mobiles will one day epitomise design in the 21st Century.
Other findings show the Far East is believed to be better than Europe and the USA for innovation. Scandinavia comes last.
Paul Molyneux MD of Oregon Scientific UK, said: “Product designers need solid support from schools, colleges, businesses and governments to continue to combine style, functionality and innovation in the things we often take for granted.
“We have been behind many product innovations and want to do our bit to encourage students to do their best and to celebrate and reward the best up-and-coming talent. Young product designers need recognition and support all over the world.”
The study was commissioned to support the launch of the Oregon Scientific International Young Designer Award 2004. Prizes will be awarded to student designers in each of the UK, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy and Spain. The overall international winner will be awarded next July and their product idea may be added to a future Oregon line-up.
Full details of the award scheme will be announced later this month.
Oregon Scientific products are designed to embrace style, innovation and functionality for ‘smart’ living and range from digital cameras, pda and performance watches to time, weather, health and electronic learning products.
