Step into a healthier lifestyle
Oregon Scientific pedometers are going to be the next ‘can’t live without’ item – as the Maidenhead-based, life-enhancing product company takes important steps to bring the latest soaring US craze to the UK. The ‘10,000 steps’ phenomenon, originally invented in Japan nearly 40 years ago, is based on a person walking 10,000 steps per day to achieve and develop their fitness levels. The average US couch potato takes about 2,300 and 3,000 steps daily, according to a study by American company Novartis Nutrition. In the UK, the National Audit Office reported in 2001 that ‘obesity had tripled over the last 20 years and continues to rise. Most adults in England are now overweight, and one in five is obese’. If this trend continues, by 2010 obesity related diseases, such as coronary heart disease, will be costing the economy over £3.5 billion a year. Paul Molyneux, Managing Director of Oregon Scientific, is concerned by such statistics but believes the trend can be reversed: ‘Improving fitness and living healthier is a complete life-style change. To reap rewards - programmes have to be maintained, monitored and adapted as fitness goals are reached. ‘Our corporate philosophy of ‘Mind over Matter’ accepts that lives are busy and time is short - but we believe you’d be surprised by what you can achieve when you put your mind to it.’ Doctors and sports trainers are now using the latest scientific research when advising on fitness regimes. It was previously believed that 30 minutes of activity was enough to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Recent figures suggest intensity and at least 60 minutes of exercise produce results. 10,000 steps a day could be the key to reducing the obesity figure – by briskly walking the equivalent of 4-5 miles, intensity and time targets are being met. But how do you motivate yourself and how do you keep track of 10,000 steps? The answer lies in a pedometer, a device that simply records your steps on a screen - so you can set hourly targets. Get an Oregon Scientific pedometer with built-in panic alarm or radio and you’ll be piling in safe, enjoyable miles without even realising. Molyneux is excited about the future: ‘Oregon Scientific is taking an active interest in the future health of the UK – our ‘Mind over Matter’ guide, launched in July, provides people with simple, easy to adapt methods of incorporating fitness into their lifestyle. With the help of Professor Ian Maynard, one of the UK’s leading authorities on sports psychology and motivation, we have developed strategies that will keep people focussed on their targets and make monitoring progress easy. ‘With the aid of our new Outbreaker fitness watch range and state-of-the-art pedometers – achieving healthy success is within anyone’s reach’. Ways to reach your 10,000 target: Walking 10,000 steps a day can be a daunting task – so here are some tips on how to reach that elusive figure:  Take the stairs instead of the lift  Park a little further away from your destination and walk an extra five minutes  Walk during your lunch break  Walk to the local shops for the forgotten bits and pieces  Walk to your friend’s house instead of driving  When watching TV – take a walk in the ad break  Don’t call your office colleagues – walk to their desk and talk face-to-face Oregon Scientific Pedometers Don’t forget to wear your pedometer at all times!
